What are Microinteractions and how can they improve the design of your mobile application

Microinteractions are small and subtle actions present in the user interface of mobile applications and software.

They are reactions of the interface to user actions. These microinteractions often go unnoticed, but they play a crucial role not only in the visual aspect of the application but also in what makes it intuitive and perpetuates the illusion that the user “controls” the application. Microinteractions can be divided into three parts: action, reaction and feedback.

An example that illustrates this illusion is the microinteractions that resemble small switches that are “activated” when sliding to the right and “turned off” when sliding your finger to the left of the screen, like the physical switches.

The application does not work that way but creates a feeling of reward and false control for the user. Microinteractions have some basic functions:

  • Provide instant feedback;
  • Encourage user interaction;
  • Make the user experience more fun without straying from the main task.

 Microinteractions are one of the most popular ways to promote acceptance of mobile application design, as they make the user feel rewarded when interacting with the interface.

When deciding to integrate a microinteraction in your app, you should check if it is aligned with your target audience and with the application's theme. Avoid exaggerating the complexity and amount of microinteractions so that they do not become too tiring and deviate the user from the final objective, using the application for its purpose.
