Instagram will have video calls: the Facebook app wants to be the main communication app

Facebook F8 is an annual conference held by Facebook for developers and entrepreneurs.

The last edition took place May 1 and 2 in Silicon Valley and featured a long speech by Mark Zuckerberg, who announced a series of news related to Facebook and other applications, such as Instagram.

During the event, the founder of Facebook announced that Instagram, popularized as a social network to share photos, will now take a new step towards becoming a communication app. Very soon, users will be able to make video calls in the direct messages section.

The new feature will be available for private conversations but also for group conversations of up to 4 users. The tool is still in the testing phase but the social network guarantees that it will be functioning globally "very soon".

Video calls are another step toward expanding Instagram's features away from the initial goal of photo sharing.

Although video calls have deserved more prominence and enthusiasm by the users of the application, Instagram will launch some more features.

The "Explore" feed will have a new appearance, now showing topic placements according to the interests of each user. Stories will also undergo changes due to integration with other apps, such as GoPro and Spotify.
